Over the Christmas of 2024, I spent five days hiking Tasmania's premier hiking track - the Overland. For many years, its popularity dissuaded me from walking it. But after I managed to snag a permit over the holiday break, I found myself at the Ronny Creek trailhead with 70km of walking ahead of me.
The rugged, wild and remote forests and button grass plains became my home for a week. And the huts, my shelter from the elements. The poor weather hampered the trip and kept my feet soaked and my camera stowed away, but after each day, climbing into a warm bunk, dry and full of hot food and good chats with other hikers made the time fly so quickly. It was good for the soul. Not to mention the rainforests, waterfalls, glacial lakes and mountains I climbed too. What a great trip.
